Beloved NYC Cabaret singer AMBER MARTIN brings her newest show "BATHHOUSE BETTE" to Catalina Jazz Club, Hollywood! Join us...

LIVE! Thurs, October 9th at 8:30PM.
 Dinner begins at 7:00PM.

This is Amber Martin's critically acclaimed, loud, luminous & loving tribute to Bette Midler’s early performances at The Continental Baths; focusing on the early 70’s, when a 26 year-old, hungry, as-yet-unknown starlet, Bette Midler, got her chops as the resident firecracker chanteuse singing at the legendary gay bathhouse uptown NYC (now a parking lot under The Ansonia).

She earned her “camp medals” in the hot & steamy bathhouse, singing to men in towels, still wet from the pool and other dark spaces. Her also as-yet-unknown house accompanist was none other than Barry Manilow. As per the fiery fashion of beloved Bette… copious amounts of big-hearted singing, salty stories and spirited dancing ensue! Prepare to get a little steamy as Bathhouse Bette pays tribute to the bawdy, sometimes naughty comedy, and beautiful music of Bette Midler in a celebration of the earliest bathhouse performances by the iconic singer, actor and comedian. Amber will be performing live accompanied by her very own “Barry” on piano.

The Australian Arts Review called Amber’s Bathhouse Bette at the recent 2021 Adelaide Cabaret Festival, “A saucy, grand-Belle, tribute show—“ and said Amber is the “queen of crescendo” and a ‘ballsy broad’ with a wicked vocal command.

    Amber Martin

    Cabaret

Amber Martin is an internationally acclaimed, NYC-based vocalist and comedic cabaret star, greatly inspired in the traditions of Lily Tomlin, Carol Burnett, Bette Midler and Dolly Parton. Her Drammy Award winning shows have been likened to “watching Ruth Draper after she’s come back from an acid trip during which she thought she was Janis Joplin.” Amber was named one of the top performers of the year by The New Yorker.

Onstage, Amber is a powerful vocalist with a deep love for all genres of classic American pop music, which also inspires her own original songs. Ms. Martin brings a combination of uplifting cabaret, power vocals, comedy and true stories to her live, raw, genre-hopping musical performances, casting light on her uniqueness from her own contemporaries, and bringing a diverse range of inclusive, button-pushing entertainment to her equally diverse audiences.

Amber's recent collaborations include Broadway's Tales of the City, belting the backing vocals on The Scissor Sisters single “Inevitable” from their album, Magic Hour (Sony Music), as well as in the hit single, "Too Much Music", on Jake Shears' recent album Last Man Dancing (Mute Records). She guest starred in John Cameron Mitchell's sold out Origin of Love Tour, in Australia (including Sydney Opera House), S. Korea, Mexico, on Broadway & all over the US.

Amber recently released her own original solo Country album, Second Heart, with songs written by herself and her friends, Rufus Wainwright, John Cameron Mitchell, Jake Shears & Brett Every, among others. She was recently the featured special guest in Jake Shears' UK album release tour singing her version of "Devil Came Down The Dance Floor", co-written with Jake & featured on his album, Last Man Dancing.

Amber continues to evolve as writer, curator and star of her own shows, such as her acclaimed international performance series', Bathhouse Bette: A Musical Celebration of Early Bette Midler (Adelaide Cabaret Fest, Joe's Pub NYC, Rude Mechs Austin, Oasis SF & Atlantis Cruises), Amber Alert! (Wild Project NYC,Joe's Pub & Allways Cabaret NOLA), Janis:Undead (Joe's Pub, Adelaide Cabaret Fest & Southeast Texas Music Hall of Fame). Catalina Jazz Club

    Contemporary Jazz

The American dream came true for Catalina Popescu in October of 1986 when she and her husband Bob created a supper club devoted to serving an experience of superb eats and the shared magic of live performance. That grand experience began at the door where every night her mother Maria would greet each guest as family and share in their love of music. Housed in Hollywood and decked out in a timeless charm, the club offers a cozy ambience under sparkling stage lights garnished with its signature concoction — Jazz. The first artist to grace the stage was the masterful flutist and saxophonist Buddy Collette, and ever since then, over the past 36 years, the Catalina Jazz Club has hosted the most illustrious legends of all time — from the powerful puffers of Dizzy Gillespie to the electrified fingers of McCoy Tyner, the bubbly belt of Dee Dee Bridgewater and Lynda Carter, the flirtatious saxophone of Joshua Redman, the slick strumming of Kenny Burrell, the insane drum clinic of Steve Gadd, the romance of Steve Tyrell, and the masterclass of Mike Stern.

For Catalina, Jazz is our way of life. It breathes pain. It knows love. It dreams hope. It bleeds courage. Whether we’re showcasing Broadway, Soul, R&B, or stand-up comedy, the lesson learned from all the greats who have serenaded our spirits is how to connect to one another. And that’s why the Catalina Jazz Club will always have a table ready for you.

The Catalina Jazz Club has been honored by A.S.M.A.C., California Jazz Foundation, Los Angeles Jazz Society, and a City of Los Angeles Certificate of Appreciation on their 25th Anniversary, which was awarded by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the LA City Council which included then City Council member and current Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
