Detroit Brooks is a renowned guitarist, vocalist, and banjoist deeply rooted in the rich musical traditions of South Louisiana. Celebrated for his soulful playing and versatility, Detroit has performed alongside legendary artists such as Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, and Irma Thomas, contributing to a sound that bridges traditional jazz, blues, funk, and R&B. A master of the banjo, Detroit has become a cornerstone of New Orleans' jazz scene, regularly performing at esteemed venues like Preservation Hall and major festivals, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. In addition to his live performances, he is a sought-after session musician and has appeared on numerous acclaimed recordings. Detroit’s dynamic artistry and deep connection to the music of his hometown have solidified his reputation as a true ambassador of New Orleans' vibrant musical heritage.

Each year, Detroit Brooks, Snug Harbor and the New Orleans Jazz Museum pay tribute to one of New Orleans' most influential musicians, Danny Barker, during his birthday month. Barker is dear to Snug Harbor, as his band Danny's Jazz Hounds played at Snug Harbor in the 1980s with Sundays being their residency for several years, prior to his passing on March 13, 1994.

Danny Barker (1909–1994) was a legendary New Orleans musician, historian, and cultural ambassador whose contributions to jazz and traditional music are revered worldwide. A versatile guitarist, banjoist, composer, and vocalist, Barker performed with some of the greatest names in jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and Billie Holiday. Beyond his extraordinary musicianship, Barker was instrumental in preserving New Orleans' rich musical heritage, founding the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band, which nurtured a new generation of jazz talent. An eloquent storyteller and writer, he authored books and shared anecdotes that captured the spirit of the city's culture and music. Barker’s memoir, “A Life In Jazz” is one of the earliest autobiographies of a local jazz icon to receive wide publication. Danny Barker’s legacy continues to inspire, standing as a testament to his profound impact on jazz and New Orleans’ cultural history.
