Pickathon Presents
Jared Mees & The Grown Children and Nick Arneson & The Sugar Hands of Moses
-
Nick Arneson has released another full length album, titled “Find A Way (Again)”. This is the
third full length album that the Portland, OR artist has released. Following a similar
approach, Arneson produced the album himself and played most of the instruments. He
tracks and mixes everything in his Portland home studio.
The album is both a surface level breakup album, as well as a deeper look at what people
go through as they get older and grapple with love and loneliness. It’s also written with the
intentional purpose of leaving space for the listener to come to their own conclusion. Some
of the songs are true stories down to the syllable, while others are completely made up
stories. It’s the listeners job to adopt the song, weave it into their own personal narrative,
and find how it can move them individually. “It’s what I always look for in a song” says
Arneson, “that ability to communicate in a way that anyone can take it and apply it to their
experience.”
The album is a rhythmic and sonic departure from his 2021 release “Sunshine Guaranteed.”
That album was all electronic and drum machine, while this album features live drums on
almost every track. “I’m originally a drummer, so to have another album without my
strongest instrument seemed silly” he says, “plus, groove makes a song and the grooves on
this album really stand out to me.” He partnered on one track (“Why Would I”) with Portland
legend Salvatore Manalo, and it’s one of the smoothest and most beautiful things he has
ever put out into the world.
Arneson is growing a significant fan base in his home town and across the region due to his
constant output and heartfelt live performances. He is a videographer as well and puts out
beautiful music videos on a regular basis. His album release show in Portland sold out, and
he plans to tour regionally as well as play locally more in 2025. He also has multiple music
videos in the works currently and is already scheming up his next album. -
Over the last 17 years, Jared Mees & The Grown Children, led by songwriter and Tender Loving Empire Records owner Jared Mees, has made five albums, covering a host of genres including indie rock, alt- country, 80s pop. Mees’ clever and soulful songwriting zooms in on the contradictions and paradoxes of life; the slipperiness of theology; an obsession with the vibrant characters of his hometown, Pagosa Springs, CO, and beneath it all, the longing for basic, human connection in a hyper-connected world. The Grown Children’s raucous, unpredictable and most of all joyous shows have taken them on many national tours as well as opening slots for Portugal the Man, The Presidents of The United States of America, Tune-Yards and Ty Segall. After taking a break during the pandemic, the newly reformed band, made up of long-time Grown Children Jesse Bettis and Becca Schultz will also welcome new players Jessica Hawley-Gamer, Daniel Pouilot and Dan Elliot to the stage.
