Richard Bona presents his Asante Trio after 3 sold out nights in 2023, he is back at Birdland with more Afrobeat, Afrocentric and Afro-Cuban influences.

The legendary bass player, performer and producer, Richard Bona, has embarked on a new musical journey with his trio - Asante - name coming from a Kiswahili origin that means Thank You. Bona’s mastery of the bass is evident as he effortlessly weaves intricate bass lines that serve as the backbone of the trio's music. Super talented rising star Jesus Pupo (Cuba) on piano and Ludwig Afonso (US) is on drums. The result is a dynamic and energetic sound that keeps listeners on their toes, eagerly anticipating what comes next.

Join us for a musical experiment but also a celebration of cultural diversity. It serves as a reminder that music has the power to transcend boundaries and bring people together!

    Richard Bona

    Jazz Funk

Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Richard Bona was first inspired to play electric bass by the late Jaco Pastorius.

The Cameroon-born artist’s balletically light-stepping runs, lazily grooving ostinatos and rhythmic eruptions are what brings in the jazz fans, but it’s Cuban, Brazilian and Caribbean dance music, Afro-beat and African traditional songs gives his music a much broader appeal.

Having played with such diverse artists such as George Benson, Joe Zawinul and Chaka Khan, it’s with great pleasure that we welcome him back to our stage after a seven year absence.
